Shaping the Future of Food Through Innovation, Research, and Sustainability
We are building a vibrant community of students, researchers, scientists, innovators, and advocates passionate about transforming how the world produces and consumes protein. Through education, research, collaboration, and advocacy, we explore emerging food technologies including plant-based proteins, fermentation-enabled foods, and cultivated meat innovations.
What We Do
Student-led initiative at the University of Nigeria promoting alternative proteins (plant-based, fermentation-derived, cultivated) through education, outreach, and partnerships.

Our Mission & Values
To advance education, research, innovation, and collaboration in alternative proteins while empowering students and communities to drive sustainable food systems transformation in Africa and beyond.
Our Programs & Activities
Research and Student Projects: We focus on promoting research in alternative proteins through funding advocacy, provision of academic support to projects on meat and dairy alternatives developed using indigenous African crops amongst others.
Events, Workshops, and Seminars
The University of Nigeria Alternative Protein Project organizes events to raise awareness and build skills in the field. These include large events on Food Systems Transformation, student innovation workshops, and collaborative seminars with local and international partners.
Student Opportunities
Students can join the initiative by becoming members, contributing to research, and applying for leadership roles. Opportunities are open to all disciplines and backgrounds.
We share curated learning materials including books, videos, online courses, and links to global initiatives and organisations like the Good Food Instituteโs expert resources, international conferences, and competitions to support student and faculty learning.

The concept of Biomass Fermentation
by David Omale, Biomass fermentation describes the efficient production of large amounts of protein-rich foodsby taking advantage of the rapid growth of microorganisms. It is a viable method used inproducing meat alternatives as a cluster of microbial cells like filamentous fungi end upbecoming the major ingredient and the final product (GFI, 2022; Alternative ProteinsFundamental…
